Oil Wealth
Flames shooting across the desert sky are a familiar sight at the oil fields of Qatar. Oil was discovered in western Qatar in 1939, and by the 1970s, one of the world’s poorest nations had been transformed into one of the richest, based on per capita income. Qatar’s oil reserves are limited, however, and the country has had to develop other industries, such as steel and cement production, in an attempt to diversify its economy.
